    • ComfortZone mechanism: Genuine Porta Pro has the distinctive adjustable ComfortZone system at each side of the headband. The plastic housing should be neatly moulded, with proper texture/detail and a positive adjustment action. KOSS confirms that this pressure-adjustment system has been part of Porta Pro's design since 1984.
    • Metal headband: The classic Porta Pro uses the recognisable two-piece sliding metal headband. It should slide smoothly and symmetrically rather than feeling crude, excessively loose or poorly finished.
    • KOSS/Porta Pro markings: Look closely at the printing, embossing and logos. Counterfeits can have slightly incorrect fonts, badly positioned printing, rough edges or shallow/poorly formed lettering.
    • Silver earcup discs/rings: Older documented counterfeits have been identified by rougher-looking metal-effect rings and differences in the headphone graphic/details on the earcup.
    • Plastic moulding: Turn the headphones over and inspect the plastic around the drivers, hinges and ComfortZone pieces. Genuine moulding should be clean and consistent. Documented fakes have had different mould marks, shapes and details.
    • Foam cushions: Genuine pads should be reasonably uniform in size, density and colour. Some documented counterfeits used slightly larger/different-coloured foam cushions.
    • Cable and plug: Check the quality of the cable entry, strain relief and plug moulding. On documented older fakes, even the depth and quality of the KOSS embossing on the plug differed from the genuine version.
    • General symmetry: Put the two sides together and compare them. Poorly aligned parts, different gaps, rough moulding, loose pivots or inconsistent finishing would make me suspicious.
    • Sound: This is a major clue. A counterfeit may look remarkably convincing but use completely different drivers. Poor bass, harsh treble, distortion or noticeably different left/right sound is a warning sign. Clone drivers are readily available, and KOSS representatives have stated that third-party drivers/headbands sold separately are not authentic OEM KOSS parts.
